Jan Dingle studied graphic design at Hornsey College of Art. She turned to etching almost by chance whilst searching for a creative outlet when her family were growing up. From basic training at Rochester Adult Education College to a Masters at Walthamstow to a commercial etching studio in Battersea, she eventually ended up in the back garden in all weathers where the large number of etchings you see today began. She feels the varied training she received contributed greatly to the individuality of her etchings.
Jan is currently based on the Norfolk Broads in Thurne, a small village well known to visitors to the Broads. Family pressures over the last ten years combined with health issues have led to a diminishing amount of etching and Jan is now plein air painting. Jan is enjoying the freedom of going out and about to different areas, plein air events and paintouts.
Jan finds the approach to painting, although having been done before the etching took over, is very different and finding the subject is very different. Jan loves the idea of something new appearing in front of her eyes instead of waiting maybe months for the final image to appear.
