The inspiration
A painted study of publications in the Hans Ulrich Obrist archive in the Central St Martins Library, containing many great interviews with famous artists. Hans Ulrich Obrist is an art curator, critic and historian of art. He is artistic director at the Serpentine Galleries, London and is the author of The Interview Project, an extensive ongoing project of interviews. He is quoted as saying "I really do think artists are the most important people on the planet, and if what I do is a utility and helps them, then that makes me happy." Ian has chosen to paint a few of the publications in homage, in this small painting on linen, set in a tray frame.

The artist

Ian Robinson

Ian Robinson's work is concerned with obsessions and the back-stories of collections. His photorealistic paintings of the objects of collections began when he was still at college, and he started to paint pictures of his own record collection. Upon moving to London, he suddenly found he had access to numerous other collections, including those of Sir John Soane, Cassiano Dal Pozzo, and Aby Warburg, and his focus has switched from music to literature. When he visits the collections, he makes drawings and takes photos, and then scales these up, sometimes by hand, sometimes by projecting the photograph on to the canvas, and paints them in minute detail over a period of months.
