Ian Hertslet was born in Johannesburg, South Africa. His mother was an artist and he started drawing and painting at a very early age. He learnt oil painting from a range of professional artists and started working as a professional illustrator, being involved with TV storyboards, for big advertising agencies. This gave him invaluable experience and taught him to work long hours under pressure. After twenty years, he left the corporate world of advertising and began freelancing and painting landscape art. He work in acrylics, oils and mixed media and this gives his works an abstract expressionist style.
Ian has exhibited his work at many of the major galleries of South Africa. Many of Ian’s South African landscape artworks hang in financial institutions, with many more having made their way to distant shores.
Artist's statement: "Long before leaving high school I knew that art had chosen me for a lifetime partnership. I am hugely interested in and preoccupied with South African Landscapes. My approach has evolved from precious brushwork to far more spontaneous painting, constantly striving for new and interesting ways of seeing things. The foundations for my life as an artist were grounded in years of discipline as a professional illustrator. More recently, my paintings merge what I call Impact Impressionism and an even more Modern Expressionist interpretation. Ultimately…no matter how divergent, the underlying message is all about self-discovery and personal fulfilment. I am convinced that good technique facilitates passion".
