Hock Tee Tan was born in Malaysia and studied Fine Art at Nanyang Academy of Fine Art in Singapore. He came to London in 1976 and has been working as a fine artist ever since.
He uses oil pastels, Chinese ink and gold and silver leaf in his artworks. Drawing from live, mainly female, models, his portraits capture not only their shape in a few well placed strokes but also an emotional aspect. His work is highly skilled and beautifully elegant. Perfection in the presentation of the final artwork is key to his practice to the point where he even frames the work himself. Hock is inspired foremost by Modigliani and is constantly seeking to push the boundaries of contemporary figurative painting.
