Hengki Koentjoro is a photographer born in Semarang, Central Java, Indonesia in 1963. He then moved to the States to study at the Brooks Institute of Photography in Santa Barbara, California. This experience allowed him to make his way into the fields of video production and fine art photography. He then returned to Indonesia and settled in Jakarta, working as a freelance videographer and video editor for nature documentaries and corporations, and on the side he started to take black and white photographs.
His works feature an elaborate choreography of composition, texture, shapes and lines. He states that his aim is "to explore along the borderlines of light and shadow, celebrate complexity in the minimalist and dive into the spiritual in the physical".
Artist's statement: "Photography can never be separated from the aspects of making the common things unusual, welcoming the unexpected, indulging and embracing ourselves with the joy of photography" (2013).
