Gail Seres-Woolfson

United Kingdom

Gail Seres-Woolfson has always been a split personality between structure and creativity. At school, she enjoyed both maths and art and has always had a passion for dance and performance. In 2014, Gail left behind a career in Arts Project Management to retrain and discover her potential as an artist. She graduated with first class honours from the 3 year full time Diploma Course at Art Academy London in 2017. Gail’s practice explores urban landscapes and the architecture, textures and rhythms within it. She was born in London and has lived in a city for all of her life. From this, her inspiration stems, “I’m fascinated by the mix of old and new architecture and the flashes of colour that juxtapose brick brown and pavement grey. I’m also inspired by Modernist and Post-Modernist urban theory and aesthetics. I’m attracted to angles, mirroring, fragmentation and a tension between observation and re-imaging.” “My exploration of the urban landscape has taken me further and further into abstraction, with the use of collage and the process of combining painting and my own photography. I create pieces which play with space and illusory depth and use imagery and textures that feel familiar but at the same time have an openness and unpredictability. Some compositions are very complex, whilst other works feel complete at a much earlier stage with fewer component parts. When I begin a piece I generally have no idea what it will end up looking like – I begin with a fragment of my photography or a few drawing lines, and then continue to add and layer shapes and lines, rotating, revealing and concealing spaces and structures and being led by intuition and chance visual connections. Even though it can be challenging, I love this process of making and I’m always excited to bring something new into being!”
