Emilia Symis

United Kingdom

Emilia Symis graduated from Norwich University of the Arts with a BA(Hons) degree in Fine Art in 2019. The same year, Symis was shortlisted for the John Ruskin Prize and was awarded the Bishop’s Art Prize. Since graduating, Symis has exhibited in London, Manchester and Norwich. Symes lives and works in Norfolk. Symes’ paintings are interested in the relationship between beauty and the grotesque. Symis explores this relationship with hyperreal, zoom cropped representation of food. Recently, Emilia has based her paintings around a narrative, which allows the viewer to imagine the context behind the image. Often the painted scenes trigger memories within the viewer; her inspiration comes from dishes she finds in retro cookbooks and snacks from her own childhood. Solo exhibitions include Emilia Symis, Razzle Dazzle, Nunnsyard, Norwich, 2018; Emilia Symis, A Feast for the Senses, The Corn Hall, Diss, 2019. Group Exhibitions include: Recent Graduates Exhibition, Battersea Spring Affordable Art Fair, Evolution London, 2020; Bishop's Art Prize: Streams in the Desert, Norwich NUA Degree Show, Norwich, 2019; Free Range, The Truman Brewery, London, 2019; John Ruskin Prize: Agent of Change, Holden Gallery, Manchester, 2019; Feasting on Femininity, Les Fêtes Galantes, London, 2019; Botanical Response, John Innes Centre, Norwich Arouse, Fairhurst Gallery, Norwich, 2018. Symis was the recipient of the Bishop’s Art Prize Finalist in the John Ruskin Prize in 2019.
