Dave West is an award-winning artist from South Wales. He moved to Ireland in 1995 and has lived there ever since. He studied at the Carmarthenshire College of Art & Design and completed a degree in Art History with the Open University.
West is passionate about ‘plein air’ painting which involves working (in all weathers) directly from the subject. His practice covers a broad range from meticulous still life paintings, loose expressive pastel drawings to charcoal. Complementing his own art practice, he runs a program of popular classes, demonstrations and workshops both privately, and in art schools and educational institutions.
He comments, ‘I am concerned with the sublime in the everyday and ordinary, the point at which beauty meets perceived ideas regarding ugliness or banality, for example the meeting of the dusty blues and pinks of dusk with a mobile home, or the intensity of car lights in a line of traffic. These atmospheric works are unapologetically romantic, and I consider them successful when they connect with the viewer on an emotional rather than an intellectual level.’
West has had over 17 solo exhibitions to date at both private and public galleries. He has also exhibited widely in group shows including The Royal Society of British Artists, the UK Pastel Society and the Royal Hibernian Academy. In 2017, he won the Gold Mayoral Award at ‘Art in the Open’ international Plein Air Festival in Wexford, Ireland
