Caroline Banks obtained her BA Honours degree (First) in Mixed Media Textiles from Loughborough College of Art & Design (now Loughborough University) in 1982.
Her practice involves using the expressive and gestural quality of brush and ink as well as gesso, paint, gilding and piercing in her explorations into the fluidity and fugitive quality of memory and the attempt to record the immaterial. An element of chance plays a part in the creative process with the ever-present element of unpredictability playing its part as in life. The most elemental and universal shape, the circle forms the core of much of Caroline’s current work. The circle connects to her meditation on the fugitive nature of memory over time, the existence of an instant, a gesture, a trace which would otherwise be lost. Music, dance…how is the feeling of that fleeting moment recalled?
She has held several solo exhibitions over her long career as well as participating in group shows including ThirtyforThirty at the National Theatre, London in 2015 which was accompanied by a publication. Caroline’s public commissions include a banner for Nottingham City Festival, a hanging for Southampton City Hospital and an installation for Monarch Knitting Machinery Ltd. in Nottingham. Her work is held in private collections in the UK, France, USA, South America and India.
