Antony Micallef is a contemporary British artist. Taught by the great landscape painter John Virtue, who himself was taught by post-war painter Frank Auerbach, Micallef has become recognised as one of the finest painters in contemporary art today. He studied Fine Art at the University of Plymouth, and after being awarded a prize in the BP Portrait Award competition has increasingly built a reputation for politically critical and pop-culturally informed, expressionist paintings.
His work is included in collections all over the world and has been exhibited in group shows in institutions such as the National Portrait Gallery, Royal Academy, Tate Britain and the ICA London.
"Art can have many functions but essentially it’s a language where if used in the right way can get us to view or hear things and sense them with pure emotion instead of thoughts."
