Adela Powell

Adela Powell was born in 1945 in Birkenhead, UK. She works very intuitively. She starts with an idea and then plays with clay. The results of this interaction are sometimes pleasing and unexpected leading her to develop new forms. The process then becomes more challenging as she deals with the aesthetic and technical considerations required to resolve each piece. Adela enjoy using the inherent textural qualities of clay to produce surfaces evocative of natural and man made objects, looking for the hidden beauty revealed by erosion.

Her work is mainly hand built in stoneware, using various slips and glazes, fired to 1240°C in an electric kiln. She started reading about sciences at Liverpool University before attending Plymouth College of Art and Design as a mature student (1976-1978) while bringing up a young family.
