Diana Ashdown

About Diana Ashdown

About the artwork

This quintessential British, seaside settlement, has oodles of charm and atmosphere in its black artists’ studios, marran grass and sand dunes. Diana has used simple shapes to convey the elements in the landscape. Diana created this hand-produced print using vinyl, cutting lines, pushing ink into these then rolling colour on top. Using etching inks which are transparent so they blend. Each print is separately printed and each time Diana inks the plate the colours change subtly, depending how much is wiped off or rolled on. With these vinyl plates, Diana doesn’t print a new plate for each colour due to the restrictions imposed by the softness of the vinyl and the pressure of the etching press, as the plates tend to stretch she is unable to register them. So she puts all the colours onto the one plate which goes through the press once, this creates a huge set of challenges and days of getting the colours, press pressure, everything right.
