About Kate Milsom

About the artwork

Mixed-media painting using oil and collage on gesso board. The idea behind this series is to celebrate remarkable, little-known people who have challenged gender stereotyping in order to live lives of adventure and professional discovery. Throughout history there are scores of women who have assumed male identities simply in order to survive financially.

Jane Dieulafoy (1851–1916) was a French archaeologist, explorer, novelist and journalist. She was the wife of Marcel-Auguste Dieulafoy. Together with her husband, she is known for their excavations at Susa, one of the most important cities in the Ancient Near East. The pottery in the painting references the excavations at Susa, while the city represents Constantinople and the grey wolf is the national animal of Turkey. During her travels abroad, Jane Dieulafoy preferred to dress in men's clothing and wear her hair short, because it was otherwise difficult for a woman to travel freely in a Muslim country. She had also dressed as a man when she fought alongside Marcel Dieulafoy during the Franco-Prussian war and she kept dressing in men's clothing when she came back in France.
