Photopolymer etching created and hand-printed printed on archival paper by despina Symeou, with hand-finished gold pigment in the cat's eyes.
Despina Symeou, a painter and a printmaker, has always favoured the human form as a subject. But an eye for the interesting and occasionally quirky elements has defintely inspired Despina's prints as well. She uses a variety of printmaking techniques to capture a figurative form, often juxtaposed with man-made scenes surrounded by the beauty of nature. Photography is most frequently used in much the same way as sketching, to collate information as a starting point or even to evolve into the dominating medium. The use of colour introduces a vibrant and playful element into what can sometimes be a sombre image, evoking a feeling or mood which is as individual as the viewer.
