About Adam Robinson

About the artwork

A set of vintage playing cards and acrylic crystals arranged on painted canvas with a cut three-dimensional element. The work is mounted behind glass within a white, wooden frame. This old deck of playing cards was discovered at a car boot sale in South London. The cards have been laid in a grid-like formation and alternate between having the border or central section of the design raised from the background. Every alternate card features a circle of dusty pink Swarovski crystals laid within the existing pattern and the remaining cards have had their raised centre section turned, just like a handle, counterclockwise. The black and white patterns and use of repetition give the viewer a sense of movement when viewed from a distance, somewhat inspired by the op art movement. The work is part of a series of works that feature vintage playing cards.
